Piccadilly Serpent Calendar

The Serpent was the first calendar watch I made. The idea is simple and goes back over a century to early pocket watches that used the outside diameter of the dial and an extended hand to indicate the date. Conventionally the date hand is much finer than the other hands, but on this version it has a stronger design in the form of a serpent to add animation to the watch.

As the time and date change the hands appear to form symbols, altering the appearance of the dial and creating a strong impression of the passage of time. The serpent hand was a clear choice; this imposing design has been used throughout earlier generations in horology. Its irregular form differentiates it from the minute and hour hands.
